In memoriam Janet Kuhl ….

In memoriam Janet Kuhl

Janet (Jan) Kuhl passed away Sept. 16, 2025. Jan’s children were with her when she died. They described their mother as: “a proud educator; dedicated leader; masterful planner; colorful storyteller; history keeper; art appreciator; and world traveler. But most of all mom, grandma ‘Jan-Jan’, Mrs. Kuhl and friend to those who knew her.”

Jan was 77 years young. Full of life and energy after retirement, she moved to Leisure World in 2011. Jan served on her Mutual Board for over 10 years. In addition to Mutual 4 Leadership, she served as president of the LW Women’s Club 2013-2017 and as co-president 2024-2025. A member claimed, “Jan was [really] something!”

Philanthropy, service, scholarship and faith were virtues important to Jan. An organization that encompasses these virtues is P.E.O., (Philanthropic Educational Organization) of which Jan was an active member. Her leadership was exemplary in two P.E.O. chapters.

Jan also loved pets and often cared for pets of neighbors and friends during their vacations, medical appointments, family emergencies or personal illnesses. Once in her home, the animals made themselves comfortable...and all seemed to know where to find the treats.

Jan was very proud of her family and enjoyed family visits. She is survived by her son, Mike Kuhl and his wife Jackie and grandsons Garrett and James in Arkansas; and daughter, Laura, in Texas.

She completed her undergraduate degree at Mills College. Her graduate degree in education was a Masters in teaching from St. Mary’s College. She spent her entire teaching/educational career in Pittsburg, California. She first served as a teacher (including Mike’s fifth grade class) at St. Peter Martyr (SPM) Catholic School in Pittsburg before becoming the principal. “This school and the Pittsburg community were an important part of our mom’s life. No memorial service will be held. Jan’s final resting place will be in Santa Barbara, California, her birthplace.
