Watch Beethoven’s ‘Fidelio’ in the CH 3 Learning Center
OPERA CLUB
All are invited to watch Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Fidelio” on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 1:30 p.m. in the Learning Center of Clubhouse 3.
This masterful symphonic work will be introduced by knowledgeable club member Lucy Poropat. The opera highlights values relevant to society today: freedom, justice, hope and faith.
Act 1 opens in a Spanish prison near Seville where Florestan has been held in solitary confinement by a tyrannical governor Pizarro, for advocating freedom of speech. The jailor, Rocco, has hired a new assistant, Fidelio, for the visible traits of strength, courage and honesty. However, this assistant is actually Leonore, the disguised wife of the jailed Florestan, looking to relieve the pain of the incarcerated man. In the process, Fidelio has also become the object of Rocco’s daughter’s admiration. When Pizarro learns of the upcoming visit of the King’s Inspector, he orders Rocco to dig a grave in the prison to accommodate Florestan who is to be killed.
Act 2 reveals Forestan proclaiming his unwavering faith in God along with his love for his wife Leonore. As Fidelio (Leonore) enters the cold and darkened prison cell in line with her orders, Pizarro arrives to murder his prey. However, Fidelio challenges the attempted murderer long enough to see the arrival of the King’s Inspector who recognizes Pizarro’s scheme and frees Florestan, achieving justice over tiranny along with the triumph of marital love.
The production is in German with English subtitles. People are encouraged to wear masks indoors. No dues or fees are collected. For more information, contact Margaret Gillon at 562-370-3844 or Margaretgi@yahoo.com.
