Learn about Saigon and Mount Fanispan in Vietnam
TRAVELING TIGERS
The Traveling Tigers will hold its monthly meeting on Sept. 17 at noon in Clubhouse 3, Room 9. The meeting will start with a potluck. To participate, bring a dish to share, a plate, silverware, a cup and a drink. After the potluck, the club will hold a short general club meeting.
After, the club is looking for two volunteers to give a short 5-minute presentation on a favorite trip, resort or traveling experience. Those interested can submit a photo for their short talk to benbenjamins@hotmail.com. To increase camaraderie and interaction between members, the group will play a 10-question multiple- answer trivia game. Prizes will be awarded to the winning four-person team.
Following trivia, Edward Hickman will give a presentation on his third trip to Vietnam, traveling with two friends who had emigrated to the U.S. after the war to visit their families.
He spent a week with them in Saigon, Hoi An, and Hue, enjoying warm hospitality and revisiting acquaintances. Hoi An, famed for its colorful lanterns along the Perfume River, was especially picturesque. When his friends stayed behind, Hickman continued north alone— first to Hanoi’s Old Quarter, then by overnight sleeper bus to Sapa near the Chinese border. Surrounded by terraced rice fields and Hmong villages, he climbed Mount Fansipan, the highest peak in Indochina at about 8,000 feet.
