Larry Hillhouse scores a rare eagle at River View

LW MEN'S GOLF LEAGUE

Six golfers of the Leisure World Men’s Golf League and 10-year-old guest Ethan Massaro competed at the 6,000-yard, par 71 Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana on Aug. 8. The weather was sunny at the 7 a.m. tee time, and it got warm quickly, but fortunately there was no wind. Greens and fairways were initially very wet, causing the ball to stop quickly instead of rolling out. Tee boxes and fairways were a work in progress, but the greens were in excellent shape. Even with the good weather and okay playing conditions, the course length allowed only two golfers to shoot net at or below par.

There was one birdie by Bob Simon, who was also closest to the pin on the 140-yard par 3 fourth hole. Gary Stivers was closest on the 140-yard par 3 12th hole. Stivers, Sam Choi and Randy Massaro tied for fewest putts.

A flight winners (net score: gross minus handicap): Stivers, 3 under 68, first place; Dave LaCascia, 1 over 72, second; Choi and Simon, third.

B flight winners: Randy Massaro, 7 under 64, first place; Bob Munn, second.

Eleven golfers tackled the 5,800-yard, par 71 River View Golf Course in Santa Ana on Aug. 11. The weather was initially overcast, but with the sun coming out about 10 a.m. it got warm very quickly. Tees, fairways and greens were in excellent shape with very little running water in the riverbeds. With good conditions, nine of the 11 golfers shot net at or below par.

There were five birdies— two by Sam Choi and one each by Seon Kim, Larry Hillhouse and Clay Fischer. Additionally, Hillhouse scored a rare eagle on the par 5 13th by sinking a long putt after reaching the green in two. Hillhouse was also closest to the pin on the 140-yard par 3 second hole, and Sam Choi was closest to the pin on the 100-yard, all over water, par 3 ninth hole. Jae Choi and Tom Ross had fewest putts.

A flight winners: Sam Choi, 9 under 62, first place; Fujio Norihiro, 6 under 65, second; Clay Fischer, 3 under 68, third; Dave LaCascia, 2 under 69, fourth; Kim, 1 under 70, fifth; Jae Choi and Hillhouse, even par 71, sixth; Gary Stivers, seventh.

B flight winners: Ross, 6 under 65, first place; Bruno Santillo, 3 under 68, second; Ron Jackson, third.

The Monday and Friday golf leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. Advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.

There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles (2 under par) are generously rewarded. Those interested in playing can contact Gary Stivers at 714-313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975.
