HUI O HULA-HAWAIIAN DANCE CLUB

Hui O Hula, the Leisure World Hawaiian dance club, invites all residents to take hula dance lessons and sway to the rhythm of the Hawaiian surf song “He‘eia,” a spirited tribute to King Kalākaua, the Merrie Monarch, known for his love of surfing and royal swagger.

Hula lessons are held every week on Tuesdays at Clubhouse 6 and Thursdays at Veterans Plaza. Both classes start at 1 p.m.

Dancing the hula is fun and healthy for both the mind and body. Although having some background in dance and music help, no experience is required. If one can clap, tap or sway, one can hula. Wear something comfortable, go barefoot or bring soft shoes. Chairs are available for those with mobility issues.

Hui O Hula is as much about community as it is about dance. In class, friendships flourish, laughter echoes, and every session feels like a mini tropical vacation.

The club gave a warm welcome to Bob Wise, Hui O Hula’s newest dancer, who is currently learning how to “surf ” Hawaiian style.

The club’s current dance, “He‘eia,” tells a playful story of Hawaiian King David Kalakaua expertly surfing the waves and being admired by all.

Dancers are also learning to incorporate na ipu, the Hawaiian gourd drums, for extra flair and rhythm. King Kalākaua was a wise and visionary leader who revived and celebrated Hawaiian culture. He brought back hula, honored native traditions, and balanced progress with deep pride in his people’s heritage.
