Sunshine Club
The Sunshine Club will host a presentation on the Battleship USS IOWA by retired Navy Captain Rich Abele on Friday, Aug. 1, in Clubhouse 3, Room 2, at 10 a.m.
The National Museum of the Surface Navy at Battleship IOWA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit driven to ignite curiosity, connect communities, and enhance understanding of America’s role in maritime peace and prosperity.
Located in the Port of Los Angeles, the ship is surrounded by maritime trade that is dependent on free and open access to the world’s oceans. The museum offers both self-guided and guided tours to the general public and serves as a field trip destination for educational STEM and history programming. The ship also hosts private, community and military veteran events.
Abele will provide an overview of the battleship’s history and a digital presentation of the physical compartments of the ship. He is a retired Navy captain with two tours of combat duty in Vietnam. He served as a gunnery officer on the USS Tripoli (LPH–10) and commanded a minehunter in Long Beach, California.
After retiring, Abele worked for Boeing as a contracts manager on the B-1B Bomber and C-17 cargo aircraft programs. For the past 13 years, Abele has volunteered at the Battleship USS IOWA Museum as a tour guide, fund raiser, training instructor, and photographer. He has a love for naval history and international travel.
All residents are welcome to attend the meeting. The Sunshine Club requires no membership fees, but donations are welcome. Refreshments will be served at the meeting.
