LW MEN'S FRIDAY GOLF

Friday Golf

Ten golfers of the Leisure World Men’s Golf League and four guests—Chuck Laine, Randy Massaro, Scott Pickett and Jeff Perkins—competed at the 5,800-yard, par 71 Meadowlark Golf Course in Huntington Beach on June 27. The weather was sunny with comfortable temperatures and a nice breeze.

Meadowlark has a fairly flat front nine holes, and the back nine is basically all elevation changes with small turtleback greens. At about 10 a.m., a signifi cant wind arose, challenging golfers to adjust aims and chose right clubs for approach shots.

The course continues to be in good condition but only three of the 12 players shot at or below net par. However, there were nine birdies—three by Glenn Barry, two by Jim Goltra and Bob Munn, and one each by each by Gary Stivers and Clay Fischer. Massaro was closest to the pin on the 140-yard, par 3 seventh hole, and Laine was closest on the 150-yard, par 3 sixteenth hole. Goltra had fewest putts.

Winners: (net score equals gross minus handicap) First place went to Goltra with a really nice 9 under 62; Fischer and Barry tied for second place at 4 under 67; Munn and Dave LaCascia placed third at 1 over 72; Stivers, Norihiro, and Sam Choi tied for fourth; Massaro, Pickett, Perkins and Laine are still in the handicapping process.

Monday Golf

At the 4,000-yard, par 62, David L. Baker Golf Course in Fountain Valley on June 30, 11 Leisure World Men’s Golf League members and one guest, Jeff Perkins, confronted the executive course. The weather was sunny and warming up nicely at the 7 a.m. tee time. The sun stayed out for the full round and the temperatures remained pleasant. A nice change from the gloom the men had become accustomed to playing in.

Tee boxes are still undergoing repairs and tee locations were well back today significantly lengthening the course. The greens were in excellent shape with trimmed rough, numerous sand traps, ample water, and tree-lined fairways.

With good playing conditions all 11 of the golfers shot net at or below par. Surprisingly, there were just 3 birdies – 1 each by Clay Fischer, Tom Ross and Dave LaCascia.

Closest to the pin on the 110-yard, par 3 third hole was Ron (Grandpa) Jackson who actually had a hole-in-one and on the 140-yard twelfth hole it was Jeff Perkins. LaCascia and Jim Goltra had fewest putts in the A group and Jackson had fewest in the B group.

Winners: (net score equals gross minus handicap)

A Flight:

Sam Choi placed first; Stivers took second; Fujio Norihiro and Larry Hillhouse tied for third; Goltra got fourth; LaCascia and Fischer tied for fifth.

B Flight

Tom Ross and Jackson tied for First; Bob Munn took second; Dom Bautista placed third.

The Monday and Friday Golf Leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. These courses are always full, so advance reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.

There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles (2 under par), although infrequent, are generously rewarded. If interested in playing, contact Gary Stivers, at 714-313-3697, or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975.
