Hula dancers will bring aloha to Rowntree Gardens June 27
HUI O HULA
Hui O Hula is a longstanding Hawaiian dance club in Leisure World. Its dancers enjoy spreading joy and aloha through hula dancing.
Lessons are given twice a week regardless of skill level. This class is a way for the dancers to stay active and connect with others. Malihini/newcomers are always embraced with open arms.
On Thursday afternoon, class is held outdoors under a spacious tent at Veterans Plaza, a wonderful setting to enjoy the season. Tuesday’s class is given in the mirror room upstairs in Clubhouse 6. Both classes begin at 1 p.m.
The hula style taught in class is the Beamer Family tradition, known for its storytelling depth, graceful movements, and cultural richness. Instructor Jojo Weingart, who once lived in Honolulu, shares her hula experience with everyone in class. Wear comfortable clothing; a long flowy dress is ideal.
On June 17, the hui/group had a delightful time performing for Leisure World’s Impaired Vision and Hearing Club. Both clubs enjoyed dancing “What A Wonderful World” together.
On June 27, a troupe of 17 dancers will be at Stanton’s Rowntree Gardens to entertain its residents and staff during its Luau Week. Dancers cherish this annual tradition.
“These visits are a true highlight for us,” said hula instructor Jojo Weingart. “It’s a joy to bring smiles and spark memories through music and dance.”
She and her dancers will open the show with the nostalgic Hawaiian classic “Hawai‘i Calls,” and close with the beloved farewell anthem “Aloha ‘Oe.” It is always wonderful to meet and greet, especially the former Leisure World shareholders who now live there.
