Redeemer Lutheran and St. Theodore
On Sunday, June 8, the congregations of Redeemer Lutheran Church and St. Theodore of Canterbury Episcopal Church will observe Pentecost Sunday, the celebration of the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the Church. The Rev. Murray D. Finck will preside over the Communion and worship service that gathers at 13564 St. Andrews Drive, 10:30 a.m. each Sunday. Nancy Anderson will be the lesson reader and Rhoda Finck will be the prayer leader. All are welcome to join.
Fellowship will continue afterwards in the Fellowship Hall with coffee, tea, cookies and snacks. The church continues to collect donations of canned and boxed foods.
The Bible study group has finished an in-depth examination of the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5-7. The group will start a new study beginning June 4, on Women of the Bible. The Bible Study meets at noon in the Fellowship Hall. People are welcome to bring their own lunch to the study. There are drinks available and usually some baked goods for a small dessert. Bishop Finck will lead the discussion. This is a great way to meet other members and make new friends who share an understanding of the faith and Holy Scriptures.
The Gospel lesson for this week is from John 14:8-17, 25-27. The second Sunday of June is the Day of Pentecost. In the Gospel from John, the disciples ask Jesus to show them the Father. He carefully explains that if they see him (Jesus), they see the Father. He also reminds them that they will know God through Jesus’ own works. Jesus makes two promises: first, to give what is asked of him in his name. The second is the promise of sending the advocate (the Holy Spirit) and reminds them that he is always true to his word.
Believers are called to understand the truth of this. The Father and Jesus are one. He is always truthful to his word. The world knows Jesus and his followers by believers’ works. Believers have the help Jesus sent, the Holy Spirit, who is at work still within all Christians.
