Letters to the Editor

I would like to thank Mike Torres of Mutual 3 for helping me when I fell on the sidewalk at the intersection of Golden Rain and El Dorado on May 20 at 10 a.m.
After I fell, I sat in the middle of the sidewalk for several minutes to get my bearings before trying to stand. Several cars drove by while I was sitting cross-legged on the sidewalk at the busy intersection.
I was disappointed and upset that not one person at the stop sign rolled down a car window to ask me if I was okay. Since moving here eight years ago, I’ve felt that Leisure World neighbors look out for each other, but I was sadly disappointed today. Thankfully, after I was able to stand, Mike rode by on his bicycle and asked if I was alright. He stayed with me and asked all the right questions since I hit my head and then made sure I got home safely. Thank you, Mike!

On May 12, Trump used his fast track route to SCOTUS to test if it will allow the immunity they gave him to permit one more excursion into lawlessness. Can a president take citizenship, guaranteed in the Constitution, away? An answer, that is immediately obvious to rational-thinking people, will be considered for two weeks (or more?) by this biased court. We have a court in which its bias is due not only to political and religious convictions, which is unavoidable, but corruption of a significant minority—'gifts' from wealthy 'family' friends who often have cases before the court and refusal to recuse when a family member is part of a group facing felony charges.
The Roberts Court will be remembered in history, if factual histories are still written, as having a record of denying humane, civil rights that dwarfs the Dred Scott Decision.
It is quite apparent that Trump's current, all-encompassing attack on facts, current and past, is to remove all sources of information other than the government. This was the exact course Hitler and Putin followed.
He's ordered the military academies and other universities to remove all books with reference to racial or gender inequalities in our history. He plans to remove funding from PBS and NPR, and brought lawsuits against public media sources.
Even the Library of Congress is under attack. Is this not a crime to which congress, if not the court, will finally say, 'no?'
We are on a path to book burning. A couple of generations of an uneducated populace, under dictators, and we will have Bradbury's 'Farenheit 451' world in our country.

This is to notify people how unsafe the crosswalks are at the signal even with the green walk sign. Please be cautious.
A couple of weeks ago, I started across the St. Andrews crosswalk on the green walk sign light. I took three-to-four steps into the crosswalk at the same time a crazy, speeding car took off from the left turn lane. After the steps, I was watching, thank goodness, and I stopped walking because the car was coming so fast.
All of the cars in the intersection were honking to alert everyone. The car did not stop until after the driver had already passed me in the crosswalk— that is how fast she was going. She could have killed me.
I was so rattled, I am just now writing this. When I told my son about the incident, he bought me a neon green vest to wear when I am walking. I did not pick up an orange sign because I do not walk slowly and thought I was safe with the walk sign on.
I certainly hope this whole new signal set up is going to be safer.

I am grateful to God and my husband for moving us to Leisure World 25 years ago.
Over that time, as I continued to age, I had forgotten how subtly Leisure World has accommodated my growing older.
I was reminded this week. We drove to San Diego for my oldest grandson's graduation from college.
We rented an Airbnb next to old San Diego.
Neither the Airbnb or Old San Diego were prepared to accommodate my needs as an older woman.
For instance, in Leisure World, when there is a piece of sidewalk that has lifed up, it is ground down, so that I do not trip.
