They had gathered as part of a nationwide day of action to demonstrate opposition to proposed cuts in Social Security and education funding, rollback in workers’ rights and the carrying out of mass deportations. The protests, spearheaded by 50501, a loose coalition of grass-roots activist groups, coincided with traditional May Day demonstrations by labor organizations. May 1, also known as International Workers Rights Day, is recognized in many countries around theworld. Itsorigindatesback to the 1880s, and it initially supported the establishment of an eight-hour workday.
