GUYS AND GALS TOURNAMENT

An overcast morning greeted the players in the Guys and Gals Tournament on April 16. Thirty-five teams of one man and one woman with varying golfing abilities teed off starting at 7:30 a.m. at the par-54 Turtle Lake Golf Course.

There was no wind, and the course was in fair playing condition with the usual wellmaintained fairways and tee boxes. This week, after aeration a few weeks back, the greens were bumpy such that putts and chips were redirected from their intended route, making all short shots problematic.

Each team competed for best net scores (gross score minus handicap), plus four circle holes (shots within a 5-foot radius rewarded), and two closest to the pin challenges. With decent weather, 30 of the 35 teams scored net at or below par. There were eight circle hole winners and 61 birdies recorded. In addition, Janice Turner shot a hole-in-one on the 104-yard par 3 fifth hole with an eight iron.

Closest to the pin for the men was Dave LaCascia and James Farr, and for the women it was Linda Herman and Nancy Smith. Low net score for the round was John Russell and Judy Ornoff at 9 under par, followed by Kevin Lindstedt and Sandy Derouin, Ron Steele and Janice Turner, and Lee Broadbent and Joann Lim, who tied for second lowest at 7 under. Four teams shot gross par.

Tournament statistics: Overall average gross score for all 35 teams was 59.9 strokes or nearly six over strokes above par. Average net scores for all teams was 52.1 strokes or two strokes under par.

A flight winners (handicaps of 0-6): Won and Jane Song, first place; John Kolthoff and Janell Hiebelt, and Tom Owens and Karen Mendon, second; Bob and Janice Turner, and Mark Rice and Yasmin Merali, third.

B flight winners (handicaps of 7-9): Lindstedt and Derouin, and Steele and Turner, first place; Dave LaCascia and Liz Meripol, Steve Walker and Carmen Daely, Dennis McMonigle and Bert Thompson, Dale Williamson and Mary Grieg, second.

C flight winners (handicaps of 10-18): Russell and Ornoff, first place; Broadbent and Lim, second; Scott Tuchfarber and Pam Krug, third; James and Grace Choi, Ron Jackson and Dale Quinn, fourth.

A shotgun scramble is planned at the Turtle Lake Golf Course on April 30. Sign-ups are underway at the clubhouse, with few spots available. Cost to play is $15 per player. Teams will be posted on Tuesday, April 29, afternoon.

Rules are: 1. Each team member tees off, and then it’s best ball until the ball goes in the hole.

2. Each best shot is to be marked, and every other player plays from within 6 inches of that spot.

3. Every team member must use their drive off the tee three times.

4. All balls are to be played into the hole—no gimmies or concessions.

5. Only the best score is entered on the scorecard.

The Men’s Golf Club spring picnic is scheduled for May 28 at the Clubhouse 1 picnic area. Dinner will be a barbecue.

The next Guys and Gals Tournament will be on May 21. The men’s tournament is played every second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Those who had planned to play in any tournament and cannot should contact Scott Tuchfarber at 909-684-0426, or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975 as soon as possible.
