A recent article in Fortune Magazine titled, “Why the Concept of Retirement Is Destructive and Needs to be Replaced” discussed human beings are meant to be productive, and that leisure and relaxation cannot provide meaning and fulfillment for the long haul.
God’s word has much to say about this stage of life that many people call retirement. Firstly, no one was ever given the gold watch in the Bible. In fact, God’s word contains countless references to the aging process that should be encouraging to LW residents and all retirees.
“The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree,/He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon./ Those who are planted in the house of the Lord/Shall flourish in the courts of our God./ They shall still bear fruit in old age;/They shall be fresh and flourishing,” Psalm 92:12-14, New King James Version.
These verses contain words like “flourish” and “fresh” and the promise, “They shall still bear fruit in old age.” Scripture is saying that even if people don’t have the energy for the demanding schedule that chases productivity, they can still decide that they will live a fruitful life unto God.
John 15:16 in the New King James Version of the Bible says “I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain.” It is in a believer’s relationship with Jesus that they find all the difference in fruit-bearing in every season.
