GARDEN CLUB

The Garden Club will meet Monday, April 21 at 1:30 p.m. in Clubhouse 2. GRF Community Gardens attendant and LW resident Julie O’Brien will give a presentation.

A part-time GRF employee, O’Brien likes to say that gardening is in her DNA.

Her dad had a spot in the old LW Community Gardens, and she enjoyed helping him with his robust, year-round zucchini crop. Her mother was also a skilled and enthusiastic gardener. She could make anything grow by thoughtfully talking to her plants and often joked about being born with two green thumbs.

For most of the community gardeners, working in their plots is more than just growing food; their gardens provide a place to find solace and peace. Her goal is making the Community Gardens a great experience for both gardeners and visitors.

Anne Milari from WE CARE will also present a brief update on the nonprofit’s activities in providing emergency assistance to local families and individuals in need. The WE CARE table will be set up in the lobby for donations of non-perishable food items, gift cards and cash.

Tickets for the Descanso Gardens Tour on April 28 will be on sale in the lobby before and after the meeting. Tickets are $45, which includes transportation and entrance to the gardens. The bus will leave from the Amphitheater parking lot at 9 a.m. and return around 5 p.m. The bus will drop everyone off at Magpie’s Grill in La Canada for brunch and afterwards continue on to the gardens for self-guided tours. The gardens are vast, so comfortable walking shoes are a must.

Each attendee will be responsible for the cost of his or her meal, or people can bring their own food.

Tickets for the June Summer Fiesta Luncheon will also be on sale at $30 per person in the lobby before and after the meeting. The Fiesta will be held on Monday, June 16, at 11:30 in Clubhouse 2. There will be a build-your-own burrito bar, along with a fiesta salad and peach cobbler.

A variety of drinks will be available. There will be musical entertainment, lots of door prizes and an opportunity drawing for an array of baskets. Diners are encouraged to wear their favorite South of the Border style finery such as serapes, sombreros, and turquoise and silver jewelry. Garden Club membership is not required to attend this event.

Coffee, tea and cookies will be served after the meeting. All are welcome to attend.
