Wa-Rite
Wa-Rite is a female-only club that meets on Friday mornings from 9-10 in Clubhouse 3, Room 1. Weigh-ins are from 8-8:45. Dues are $10 a year, plus 10 cents upon signing in. LW ID cards must be shown. Women who want support on their weight-loss journey and to meet like-minded people are welcome to stop by no later than 8:15 to weigh-in and complete the registration paperwork.
At the Feb. 14 meeting, the Wa-Rite members lost a total of 23.5 pounds for the week with the biggest loser being Darleen Gardner, having lost 3 pounds as a result of not eating so much and trying harder than usual to be aware of what she was eating.
The speaker of the week was Jan Friedland, whose topic was “Finding Love in All the Right Places.” She pointed out that adults who have strong social connections have a lower risk of many health problems including depression, high blood pressure and unhealthy weight. Friedland emphasized that there are many ways to fall in love, such as adopting a dog, cat or bird that gives unconditional love; doing volunteer work in Leisure World at a club, library, temple or church; helping others, like a neighbor, family member or friend or perhaps being there for a young child. Friedland spoke of a woman who goes to the Long Beach Memorial Hospital to hug babies each week, and Friedland herself of doing something new, like cooking lessons online—her husband can’t stop thanking her for that.
The weekly food for thought was: “Love is knowing it does not matter how slowly you go, as long as you don’t stop.”
