Fujio Norihiro eagles No. 16 at Baker Golf Course

LW MEN'S GOLF LEAGUE

It was a clear morning that greeted 11 men of the Leisure World Men’s Golf League at the David L. Baker Executive Golf Course in Fountain Valley on Jan. 31.

With decent playing conditions, the golfers attacked the course and all 11 shot well under par. Fujio Norihiro had a rare eagle (two under par) on the 270-yard par-4 16th hole, and there were four birdies: two by Norihiro and one each by Ron Jackson and Mike Jimenez. Clay Fischer had fewest putts in the A flight, and Bob Munn had fewest in the B. Closest to the pin on the 100-yard par-3 third hole was Jim Goltra, and Kyle Van Am was closest on the 140-yard par-3 12th hole.

All scores below are net (gross score minus handicap).

A flight winners: Norihiro, 13 under par 49, first place; Clay Fischer, 10 under 52, second; Gary Stivers, 8 under 54, third; Goltra, 6 under, fourth; Chris Lankford, 5 under, fifth; Sam Choi and Van Am, 4 under, sixth.

B flight winners: Bob Munn and Jackson, 8 under 54, first place; Duke Park and Jimenez, 4 under 58, second.

It was a cool, damp and very foggy morning that greeted nine golf league players at the Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana on Feb. 3. Willowick is reported to be the oldest course in Orange County and holds the distinction as one of the few clubs in California that has no water hazards.

Fog persisted throughout the entire round with no sun appearing at all. The first eight holes were played with barely 100-150 yards of visibility. For several hours, the group in front could not be seen except for vague shadows in the mist.

With these poor playing conditions none of the nine golfers shot net at or under par, and there were no birdies. Jim Goltra and Gary Stivers tied for fewest putts in the A flight, and Tom Ross had fewest in the B. Closest to the pin on the 140-yard par-3 fourth hole was Clay Fischer, and Duke Park was closest on the 140-yard par-3 12th.

All scores below are net (gross score minus handicap).

A flight winners: Dave LaCascia and Jim Goltra, first; Clay Fischer, second; Sam Choi and Stivers, third; Fujio Norihiro, fourth.

B flight winners: Park, first; Ross, second; Bob Munn, third.

The Monday and Friday golf leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. Advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.

There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Those interested in playing can contact Gary Stivers at 714-313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975.
