LW)MEN'S)GOLF)TOURNAMENT

On Jan. 22, a sunny, but very cool morning greeted 56 men at the par-54 Turtle Lake Golf Course for the LW men’s golf tournament. Instead of competing as individuals, 29 two-man teams were formed and a best ball tournament was played. The outbound nine was played off the shorter red tees, and the inbound nine off the blues. The teams competed for best team net scores (gross score minus handicap), plus four circle holes (shots within a 5-foot radius rewarded), and two closest to the pin challenges.

The playing environment did not contribute to great scoring as only one team—Alan Sewell and Dave LaCascia—came in at gross score under par. However, 28 of the 29 teams were net (gross score minus handicap) at or below par, plus there were 12 circle hole winners, and 51 birdies recorded.

Low net score for the round was shot by Steve Kang and Jae H. Lee at a 11 under par 43, followed by John Kolthoff and Mark Tal at 10 under 44. Closest to the pin for the men on the front nine was Bob Barnum and on the back nine it was Steve Kang.

Tournament statistics: Overall average gross score for all 29 teams was 59.35 strokes or just over 5 strokes above par. Average net scores for all teams was 49.5 strokes or just short of five under par.

A flight winners (handicaps of 0-6): Thomas Kim and Hyon Shin, 5 under 49, first place; Sewell and LaCascia, Ralph Koizumi and Tom Owens, Seon Kim and Won Song, and Trai Nguyen and Gene Archambault, 4 under 50, second.

B flight winners (handicaps of 7-11): Kang and Lee, first place; Kolthoff and Tal, 11 under, second; Bob Johnston and Ron Jackson, 9 under 45, third; Jack Haskins and Rolando Ramirez, 8 under, fourth; Steve Walker and Bob Turner, and Ron Steele and Young Lee, 6 under, fifth; Young J. Kim and Won G. Park, 5 under, sixth.

C flight winners (handicaps of 12-18): Roland Phillips and Paul Shellenberger, 9 under 45, first place; Marv Jones and Dale Williamson, 8 under 48, second; James Farr and Noe Alcaraz, 7 under, third; Art Salazar and Dennis Anctil, 6 under, fourth; Dennis Anctil and Darry Holten, 4 under, fifth.

The next men’s tournament is on Feb. 12, and every second and fourth Wednesday of each month. The next Guys and Gals Tournament will be on Feb. 19, then every third and fifth Wednesday if there is one. Those who had planned to play in any tournament and cannot should contact Scott Tuchfarber at 909684-0426, or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975 promptly.

—Dave LaCascia On an 18-hole practice round, Pat Paternoster achieved the enviable goal of having two holesin- one in the same round. This was achieved a few weeks ago by Patty Littrell and the statistics say it’s about a 1 in 67 million chance. To have two of this situation occur this close together has even longer odds. And the odds of making two holes-in-one in just nine holes is 156,250,000 to one. To put this in perspective, the odds of being struck by lightning in a lifetime in the United States varies from 1 in 1,222,000 in a lifetime to just around 1 in 15,300 in single year.
