LW Men’s Golf League
It was a cool and clear morning that greeted 10 players of the Leisure World Men’s Golf League at the David L. Baker Golf Course in Fountain Valley on Jan. 10.
Even with decent playing circumstances, only five of the 10 golfers shot net at or under par, but there were a few low scores. In addition, there were just three birdies—one each by Gary Stivers, Fujio Norihiro and Larry Hillhouse. Hillhouse had fewest putts in the A flight, and Bill Zurn had fewest in the B. Closest to the pin on the 100-yard par-3 third hole was Seon Kim, and Choi was closest on the 140-yard par-3 12th hole.
All scores below are net (gross score minus handicap). A flight winners: Seon Kim, 7 under 55, first place; Stivers, 4 under 58, second; Hillhouse, 1 under 62, third; Lankford, even par 62, fourth; Clay Fischer, fifth; Norihiro, sixth; Choi, seventh.
B flight winners: Duke Park, 3 under 59, first place; Zurn, second; Bob Munn, third.
Nine men confronted the par-71 Meadowlark Golf Course in Huntington Beach on Jan. 13.
The course has narrow fairways, significant elevation changes, and with numerous water hazards continually challenges the average league golfer. As such only three of the golfers were at or under par for the round. In addition, there were four birdies—one each by Sam Choi, Chris Lankford, Daniel Mahoney and Fujio Norihiro. Gary Stivers and Jim Goltra tied for fewest putts in the A flight, and Duke Park had fewest in the B. Closest to the pin on the 140-yard par-3 seventh hole was Choi, and Goltra was closest on the 140-yard par-3 16th hole.
All scores below are net (gross score minus handicap). A flight winners: Norihiro, Stivers, and Chris Lankford, 1 under 70, first place; Choi, second; Goltra and Clay Fischer, third.
B flight winners: Mahoney, first place; Park, second; Bob Munn, third.
The Monday and Friday golf leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. These courses are always quite full, so advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.
There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles (two under par) are generously rewarded. Those interested in playing can contact Gary Stivers at 714-313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975.
