Humanist Association

The Leisure World Humanist Association will meet on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 10:30 a.m. in Clubhouse 3, Room 1.

The question members will discuss during the meeting will be, “Do people get their ethical values from religion or philosophy?”

The group will watch a YouTube video on the subject titled “Ethics and Religion,” by Australian philosopher and writer Peter Singer.

Singer is currently a professor of bioethics at Princeton University. He is known for his utilitarian and humanitarian approach to ethical questions. Singer’s books include “Animal Rights, Practical Ethics and Rethinking Life and Death.”

After watching Singer’s talk the Humanist Association will have an group discussion of the subject. Some questions might be: “Do most Americans get their ethical values from religion?”“If people are more religious is there less crime?” “Should religion be exempt from criticism?” “Can people be good without religion, or is anything permitted if there is no immortality?” and “How do different religions view ethical values?”
