The Torah reading for this Shabbat is called “Chayei Sarah,” or “The Life of Sarah” (Genesis 24:52-25:18). It is the events following the matriarch’s death. Avraham has sent his servant to the land of his birth to find a wife for his son Yitzchak. The Third Triennial Cycle reading is the introduction of Rivka, who will be Yitzchak’s wife. The Torah relates the moment the two young people meet for the first time and a beautiful moment when Yitzchak brings Rivka into his mother’s tent and “loved her.” It is the first time the Torah describes a man’s love for a woman. At the end of the reading, Avraham dies and is buried by his two sons, Ishmael and Yitzchak, together.

All Beit HaLev services use the special prayerbooks, “Lev L’Lev,” which include excerpts from the Reform Siddur, “Mishkan HaT’filah.” Printed versions of the prayerbooks will be available for sale when Beit HaLev resumes live, in-person services.
